Generally speaking, stroke attacks older people starting at the age of 55.
The risk becomes higher as the age increases. The reason behind this is because our arteries tend to constrict and becomes narrower as we grow old.

However, younger ones are not exempted from having a stroke. There are many factors that even the young generation could be affected by a stroke.

History in the family

If a member of your immediate family had suffered a stroke, you are also most likely to experience the same because of genetic factors. But, a stroke could be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Lifestyle Habits

The following are everyday habits that could lead to stroke.

Smoking increases the risk for stroke because it can damage the heart and blood vessels. It raises blood pressure and reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood.

• Excessive alcohol

Too much alcohol increases the level of triglycerides, a type of fat that harden the arteries and raises blood pressure.

The recommended daily alcohol intake for women is 1 drink a day and 2 drinks a day for men.

• Unhealthy diet

Large consumption of fatty and salty foods leads to high blood pressure that could later lead to stroke. Not giving attention to your diet could also lead to obesity and diabetes that are also stroke risk factors.

• Lack of Physical Activity

Sedentary lifestyle or lack of physical activities also leads to obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

It is said that if you do even a simple activity like brisk walking at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week, could keep your heart healthy and will improve your metabolism.

According to reports, 425,000 women suffer from stroke annually, 55,000 more than men. This is attributed to a woman’s lifespan that is longer than men. Also, there are risk factors that are unique to women only like hormones, pregnancy, and childbirth.

Stroke does not only affect older people. It could affect anyone even children. The most that you could do to prevent a stroke from happening is to watch your diet and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle
